John Ruge MEd (Hons), LLB (Hons), BA, PGDipTchg

I am passionate about young people and the transformative power of education. As an educational leader I constantly seek to empower both adults and young people to realise their potential. I love helping young people to be effective communicators, critical thinkers, and compassionate members of their communities, during their high school years and beyond.

My first career was in commercial litigation, followed by extensive experience as an educational leader in a range of state and independent schools in Christchurch and Frankfurt, Germany. I have been a member of a number of diverse boards in the charitable, not-for-profit and education sectors, and currently chair the Board at Avonhead School where I have overseen a significant post-earthquake building and refurbishment programme, and guided the development and implementation of its strategic plans.

As a Treaty partner, I actively seek opportunities to increase my knowledge and understanding of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori, and to incorporate this into every aspect of my practice. As a leader I invest heavily in building relational trust and recognising the intrinsic value of individuals.

I am a compassionate listener and calm under fire. I have firsthand experience managing a wide range of critical incidents involving complex stakeholder and external agency relationships.

Tiffany Scott BA, PGDipHRM, CMHRINZ, MInstD

As a people leader, human resources professional and mother of two, I am passionate about all things people and culture, including creating the conditions and culture for people and organisations to be at their best.   For the past decade I have worked within the NZ public service in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and currently lead a multidisciplinary team of specialist corporate functions within a large service delivery and operations environment.  Prior to joining the public service I worked in Human Resources teams in private and public sector organisations in the UK, New Zealand and Australia, in the fields of education and investment banking.  My association with the University of Canterbury (UC) has been long and varied, firstly as an undergraduate student of psychology and French, then as a staff member in Human Resources and the College of Arts, and most recently as a College House and UC parent.  Having lived and raised our children within boarding school communities in Christchurch and Australia and watched them both thrive in residential colleges as tertiary students during the Covid-19 pandemic,  I appreciate the unique challenges and responsibilities that come with residential life in an educational setting and am highly motivated by the wonderful opportunities that exist for learning, personal growth and wellbeing within such a close and supportive community. I value diversity it all its forms and continue to grow my own knowledge and experience of Te Ao Māori and Pasifika culture and world views, acknowledging our unique context here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. I have high standards of integrity and contribute to public service accountability as member and Chair of several internal governance committees in the areas of risk and assurance, design, investment planning, organisational development and incident and crisis management.
