The College House First Year (Fresher) Scholarships for 2015 have been presented by UC’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr.

These three CH scholarships are awarded to first year students who have shown strong and successful participation and leadership in school and/or in their local communities. The value of each scholarship is $1,000.

Winners of the College House First Year (Fresher) Scholarships for 2015 are:

William Adlam. As well as strong academic success, William’s passion is the outdoors and the natural environment. He has two North Island and four New Zealand titles in adventure racing which involves running eight hours (or sometimes for many days) carrying a heavy pack through the mountains followed by biking, running and kayaking. A volunteer instructor and member of the Taranaki Alpine Club, William is committed to search and rescue and is looking forward to being involved in UC’s team.

Sam Clarke. Dux of King’s College and top in New Zealand in last year’s CIE AS Chemistry exams, Sam ranks very highly against the very best. (He’s also won three UC scholarships, see the list below.) Sam is a witty and eloquent debater, having been highly commended in the Premier Advanced team that was runner-up in the Russell McVeagh Seasonal Championship. Last year he completed the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award spending its service component engaged in reading recovery with small children at a local primary school and visiting Tonga to help teach children, building furniture and painting classrooms.

Sophie Tingey. Sophie has enjoyed excellent academic results, as well as participating to a high level in her extra-curricular activities. She has competed at the New Zealand Eventing Championships and the North Island Show Jumping Championships; and she volunteers at local pony clubs. In the winter she plays hockey and represented Tauranga in the U18 grade last year. An accomplished public speaker she has had success with Trinity Guildhall Speech and Drama exams.

William, Sam and Sophie are all studying for BE (Hons) degrees.
