Roger Kerr 1945-2011
College House 1963-1965 (CH No. 1137)
Sadly, College House has said farewell to another well known alumnus this week. Roger Kerr, Executive Director of Business Roundtable.Roger was a Houseman at College House (CH) from 1963-1965 whilst a student at the University of Canterbury. Roger was a resident at CH for two years while studying for his undergraduate degree and embraced CH and its traditions. By all accounts it was a pretty good bunch of blokes who were in the House with Roger. They are planning a 30thReunion to be held in 2013 and Roger will be missed. He was very supportive and encouraging of the College and attended our Wellington alumni events.
Roger came back to visit College House and dined with the students in 2008. After dinner he met and talked with a House group in the Board Room about economics and his views on the NZ economy. The students loved speaking with him, he respected their views and challenged them and spoke plainly and with knowledge and a sharp intelligence.
The Principal, a colleague and I met with Roger earlier this year in Wellington. It was wonderful meeting him in his office, surrounded by his paper work, evidence of a busy career and a passion for his work. He spoke frankly about his illness, at that stage still hoping for some positive news and very pragmatic about the future. I was privately impressed with his personal ownership of his illness; he took it as personal responsibility and a challenge to learn everything there was to know about his situation.
A number of the CH Alumni who were at College House with Roger, live in and around the Wellington area and many more have followed his career with interest.
I know the College House community joins me in wishing Roger's family our thoughts and prayers at this time.
